“The path of the pugilist is one of incessant training aimed at mastering the traditional techniques of hand-to-hand combat. Though pugilists command formidable power when unarmed, they are wont to use metal, leather, and bone weaponry to maximize their destructive potential.
Their preference for fighting at close quarters makes negotiating distances an absolute necessity. Many among them accomplish this by avoiding burdensome armor, allowing for maximum mobility while they move in for the kill.”
—Game Description
Pugilist is a Disciples of War class that specializes in hand-to-hand combat. It is a physical, melee class that forgoes heavy armor in favor of mobility. Pugilist's Guild is in the desert city of Ul'dah. If you choose pugilist as your first class, you will start off in the city of Ul'dah. At level 30, Pugilist can acquire the job Monk if they also have the lancer class at level 15.
Pugilist is a physical damage dealing class specialized in single target dps. The most important stat for pugilist is strength, which increases attack power. Pugilists utilize positioning and combinations to maximize their damage.
What about Monk then?

How do I become a Monk in ARR?
You need to be a Pugilist (30) and Lancer (15) First! If you’ve met these requirements, you can return to the Pugilists Guild in Ul’dah to get your quest to obtain the “Soul of the Bard”. In FFXIV ARR, becoming a job is as simple as equipping the required Soul.
What’s the Monk playstyle?
Monks evolve the Pugilist rotation a bit. Dragon Kick becomes a high priority skill, making sure you keep the debuff up (-10% blunt resistance) becomes key to maximing your DPS. You also gain Fists of Fire, which is a damage increasing stance. You also gain some good AoE in the form of Rockbreaker.
All in all, Monks are a pretty good upgrade to Pugilists. All 5 skills are useful, and worth sacrificing the other 5 cross-class skill slots for.
What are good Monk stats?
Monks scale well with alot of STR. Much like Dragoons, any point you cant put in STR goes into VIT. And when thinking of secondary stats, take any CRITICAL CHANCE you can find.
What are the Monk Traits?
As of now, there are no advanced job specific traits. You inherit all Pugilist traits you’ve already learned.
What are the Monk Skills?
Aside from the skills below, you may use any skill you’ve learned as a Pugilist. Monks also have access to some Lancer and Archer skills.
How many cross-class skills can I use?
When choosing advanced job, the amount of cross-class skills you may equip decrease to a total of 5 (as compared to 10)
Do I have to level up Monk separately?
No, your EXP in Monk rises as you level up your Pugilist class.
