After completing the story line, there are several things you should do.
The first and foremost, it would be wise to fully rank up your Grand Company and get the high level gear from that.
Next up you'll want to start doing Ifrit Hard mode to get your Ifrit weapon. This will help you with future farming, quests that you'll need to do to reach true end game content.
After getting your Ifrit weapon the next thing(s) you should do are:
Start running CM (Castrum Meridianum) for tomes of Philosophy
Start Running AK (Amdapor Keep) for Tomes of Philosophy/Mytholgy and iLevel 60 gear)
Start up your A Relic Reborn quest. (This yields your class' ultimate* weapon.
Tomes of Philo are used for buying Darklight gear, which is iLevel 70 gear. You're shooting for Darklight gear to do The Coil of Bahamut.
Tomes of Mythology are used for buying what I like to call Hero gear, which is just iLevel 90 gear.
(iLevel = Item Level) Though the max level for required to wear gear is level 50, you can find gear with iLevel up to level 90.
CM Yields - 100 Tomes of Philo and no gear
AK Yields - 80 Tomes of Philo, 40 Tomes of Myth, and iLevel 60 gear.
Most people running CM at this point know how to run CM quickly so your best option for getting tomes of Philo will be there.
To yield the best outcome, I suggest running AK a few times to get a bit of gear then do some CM on the side. Once you get half-way geared up(half as in half of your gear at least AK/Dark Light), I suggest you make your way to the Garuda Hard Mode in your relic quest fight but no further. If Garuda is easy for you at this point, feel free to farm for the Garuda weapon, it is a bit of a jump from the Ifrit weapon.
After you have fully geared out in at least Darklight, AK gear then I suggest you continue on to Titan Hard Mode. This fight can be tricky so don't give up if you spend a week trying to find a party for it. Ask your FC members if they will help. Not in an FC? This is a group opportunity to join one. (You may need to do the same thing for two previous fights in the Relic quest against Chimera and Hydra. They are high level bosses that require a party of 8, but you are not able to use the duty finder.)
After you've done all of this you'll be at the final step of getting your relic weapon, but you aren't done there. To finish getting your relic weapon, you'll need 900 tomes of Philosophy. Your relic weapon is iLevel 80 at this point, but you can upgrade it making it a +1 weapon with an iLevel of 90. To do this you need 900 tomes of Mythology then you purchase three Thavnarian Mist at Revenant's Toll. Return to Hyrstmill and trade your relic weapon and the three Thavnairian Mist to the forge.
From here on you're going to need to run Coil of Bahamut or do AK for Tomes of Myth to finish off the rest of your gear/get your further into Coil.
